The first time I discovered this trick, I felt a little silly for not having seen it sooner. I was putting together an itinerary for a client when suddenly the numbers just worked: with only three strategically placed days off, I could build two full weeks of travel. I haven't planned any other way since.
The secret isn't asking for more days off. It's knowing when to ask for them. Argentina has one of the most generous holiday calendars in the region — and when you combine those days with weekends and a couple of days off placed in exactly the right spot, the math becomes irresistible.

The formula
Winning strategies for 2026
The 2026 calendar has some extraordinary combinations. I identified all of them and I'll explain exactly how to make the most of each one.
The Carnival combo
Monday the 16th and Tuesday the 17th of February are national holidays. If you take Wednesday the 18th off, you stretch it all the way to Sunday the 22nd with just 1 day off..
The classic: Easter Week
Good Friday April 3rd + Saturday the 4th + Sunday the 5th + Easter Monday the 6th. Take Thursday the 2nd and Tuesday the 7th off = 9 straight days. with only 2 days off.
The May long weekend
May 25th falls on a Monday in 2026. Take Friday the 22nd off and you've got a 4-day long weekend. Perfect for regional destinations.
The Winter long weekend
June 20th (Flag Day) falls on a Saturday → the movable holiday shifts to Monday the 22nd. Take Tuesday the 23rd off for a 5-day winter getaway.
The Spring long weekend
October 12th (Cultural Diversity Day). Take Friday the 9th off and Monday the 12th is already a holiday = 5 days in the best season of the year. Mendoza, Córdoba, or the North are waiting for you.
The November super combo
November 20th (National Sovereignty Day). Combined with the previous weekend and 2 strategically placed days off, you can get up to 9 straight days..
Your master plan: 5 days = 32 days of travel
If you use every opportunity in the year with just 5 total days off, here's the result:

Where to go, and when?
Not all holidays are the same. The right destination depends on the time of year. Here are my recommendations for each window:
Buenos Aires
Theater, tango, and great food. The city at its most festive.
Northern Argentina
Salta, Jujuy, and the Quebrada de Humahuaca. Unique light and color.
Mendoza
Wine harvest, mountains, and vineyards. Perfect in any season.
Bariloche and the Lake District
Snow, fondue, and mirror-still lakes. Patagonian winter at its finest.
Córdoba and the Sierras
Close by, affordable, and stunning in bloom. The perfect getaway.
Misiones · Iguazú Falls
Before the extreme heat, with the water flow at its most impressive.
How not to mess it up in the process
Spotting the holidays is the easy part. Here are the mistakes most people make and how to avoid them:
Book 3–4 months ahead
Long holiday weekends are well known. Airlines and hotels raise prices as they approach. Whoever books first, wins.
Overnight flights: save time and money
Flying overnight from Sunday to Monday means arriving at your destination at dawn without "losing" a single useful day of travel.
Always free cancellation
Calendars can change, and so can plans. Only book with free cancellation until everything is confirmed.
Consider less obvious destinations
Iguazú is stunning, but it's packed during holidays. Iberá, the Quebrada de los Conchas, or the Litoral region have the same magic with fewer crowds.
Premium overnight buses as an alternative
For distances of 6–10 hours, a first-class overnight sleeper bus costs half the price of a flight and you wake up at your destination well rested.
Set up price alerts now
Google Flights, Skyscanner, and Hopper will notify you when prices drop. Set up alerts today for the destinations you're interested in.
The tools I actually use
No paid promotions, just what I really use to plan:
Accommodation: Booking.com with the free-cancellation filter. For rural or alternative destinations, Airbnb often has unique options you won't find in hotel chains.
Planning: Google Calendar to visualize the holiday blocks + a simple spreadsheet to compare prices. You don't need anything more than that.
Insurance: A must. I always use Assist Card or Universal Assistance for international trips. For domestic trips, check whether your health plan covers emergencies in other provinces.
